NHRDN Delhi Chapter organized 6th Young Manager’s Conference (YMC) on 8th & 9th May 2009 at Hotel Eros Intercontinental, New Delhi. YMC is a biennial conference that has become one of the flagship offerings of the Delhi Chapter. This is one of the most prestigious events hosted by Delhi Chapter. This year the topic was Globalization: Creating a Boundaryless HR which reflects the current economic and business scenario that is changing rapidly and India has come to the fore front of this entire economic revolution as being one of the few countries worldwide to still grow at over 5% GDP. The two days of brainstorming served as a forum for sharing the best practices, ideas and opinions. The unique features of the conference were research paper presentation from the best young talent, a unique HR Quiz and panel discussions. In short it was an action packed, fun filled, and outstanding conference. The audience comprised of HR Professionals, Line Managers, Practitioners, Academic Community and students from all over the country and other countries as well. The speakers were eminent Business Leaders, HR experts, Management Gurus, and renowned practitioners from the country. The event was a huge success which saw around 230 participants across the country.


On 8th May the day started with the welcome note and recitation of NHRD-N Code of Conduct by the host and convener of YMC Mr. Faisal Nadeem Saiyed, Associate Director-OD, Aviva Life Insurance Co. Ltd. Followed by the video of Mr. S.Y. Siddiqui, MEO-(HR, IT, Finance & Admin), President - Delhi Chapter, NHRDN President, Delhi Chapter, NHRDN, who addressed how the sharing of HR knowledge and different people practices are beneficial for young HR professionals in the world of globalization through creation of appropriate HR processes linked to business growth.

The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Mr. Aquil Busrai- Executive Director HR, IBM, President NHRDN, who emphasized that during the ongoing recessionary cycle, organizations should focus on utilizing the current cycle as an opportunity to think out-of-the-box through creativity and innovation, hence adding value to the organization.

Mr. Manish Sabharwal, Chairman and Co-founder, Team Lease Services gave the keynote address. He said current global crisis is unique. The young HR professionals should act as a strong enabler in guiding the organization; recognize the need of employees and to appropriately follow principles of management irrespective of high tide or low tide.

The first Session of the day was privileged to witness the unique perspectives shared by Mr. Arvind Pandit, Director, Head of Operations, HAY Group, Mr. Aquil Busrai- Executive Director-HR, IBM & President NHRDN. The discussion was facilitated by Mr. Aadesh Goel, Chairman and CEO, PeopleStrong.

A unique feature of the conference was the research paper presentation contest. The contest received a large number of entries from across the country and from different fields including people from Industry and academia both. Nine papers were shortlisted to be published in NHRD-N book which was edited by Prof. Subir Verma of MDI, Gurgaon and Mr. Gautam Brahma. The top three finalists presented their paper which was judged by experienced HR gurus. Mr. Amit Jain from Aricent Technologies bagged the first prize. Second prize has been bagged by Ms. Shilpa Anna Rajan and Ms. Vidya Ramaswamy of TCS, Bangalore and Ms. Vidya G. Singh from TCS, Bangalore stood third in the contest. The contest was hosted by Mr. Gautam Brahma.


The topic for discussion for the second session of day one was- HR: Emerging Expectations - A CEO Perspective. The eminent panelists were Mr. Roop Salotra, President and Chief Executive Officer, Chemicals Business and Packaging Films Business, SRF Limited and Mr. Pawan Kapoor, Executive Advisor, Salora. The facilitator for the event was Mr. P. Dwarakanath, Director Human Capital, MAX India. Mr. Salotra spoke on HR challenges as to how to keep people engaged, how to grow when economy is on a downturn and when to let go poor performances. He also spoke on hidden opportunities in the recession times. Mr. Kapoor shared his personal experiences out of B-school, and what is expected out of today’s HR and how the era of strategic vision is important in connecting with people sensitivity in recessionary times.
The panel for the last session of the day comprised of Mr. Gautam Brahma, Management Consultant and Mr. Shantanu Dhar, Executive Director-HR, Dalmia Cements. The discussion was moderated by Mr. N. N. Akhouri, Professor, International Management Institute, New Delhi. The topic for the discussion was Managing Knowledge and Innovation- creating a learning organisation, Effectiveness of Virtual Team, learning and development.


The first day ended with the Quiz prelim which was conducted by Ms. Rahi Goshwami of Quadrangle and one to one interaction with HR Heads. All volunteers for this session got 10 Minutes for one to one interaction with HR heads to ask for queries and suggestions. The HR Heads who participated in this interaction were Mr. Suresh Tripathi - President HR, SRF Group, VP- Delhi Chapter, NHRDN, Rajneesh Bawa - Director-HR,India and South East Asia. New Holland Tractors, Aquil Busrai - Executive Director HR, IBM & President – NHRDN, S. Vardharajan - EVP and Chief Human Resources Officer, Quatrro Group, Pankaj bansal - Co-founder & EVP, PeopleStrong, P. Dwarakanath - Director, Human Capital, Max India, N.S. Rajan Partner, Human Capital, Ernst & Young, Regional President - North, NHRDN, P.V. Ramanamurthy - VP- HR, Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages, Yash Yadav, EVP- HR, General Motors, C.S. Raju, Head HR, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., Gautam Chainani, Chief People Officer, Aditya Birla Group Financial Services, Neeraj Goel, Director HR, SRL Religare.
Second Day started with the host Mr. Faisal Nadeem Saiyed giving a brief on day one’s events with special focus on the one to one interaction of participants with the HR heads. There were 30 volunteers who interacted with the HR heads discussing various career issues.

The final round of the quiz was hosted by renowned quiz master Mr. Derek O’ Brien. The Quiz was sponsored by Sri Balaji Society. There were five teams namely Amma’s Angels, Priyanka’s Pet, Mayavati’s Memsaab, Sheela’s Supergals, Kabab mein Haddi. The winners for the quiz were Amma’s Angels and the runners up were Kabab mein Haddi. The quiz was thoroughly enjoyed by the audience.
The topic for discussion for the session one of day two was “Global Perspective - Defining and Managing Global HR Practices & processes such as Comp and Benefit, Performance Management Systems, HR Operations”. The eminent panelists were Mr. Gautam Chainani, Chief People Officer, Aditya Birla Group Financial Services, Shantanu Banerjee, Director -HR, Steria (fornally known as Xansa). The Facilitator for the session was Mr. N.S. Rajan,  Partner, Human Capital,  Ernst & Young, Regional President - North, NHRDN.

The topic for the second session was Evaluating Human Capital : Harnessing Efficiency and Productivity in Emerging Markets. The Panelists were Pankaj Bansal, Co-founder & EVP, PeopleStrong HR Services and Mr. Dhruv Prakash, Director HR – Investment Advisor, Helion Ventures.
The last panel discussion of the event has witnessed presence of eminent personalities like Mrs. Sayantani Gaddam, General Manager, Feedback Ventures and Sanjeev Sethi , Corporate Director - HR, Imperial. The discussion was moderated by Mr. Naveen Bhatia , COO, Bharti Leanings. The topic for the discussion was “Managing Cross Cultural Conflicts - CSR, issues related to Gender, Sexual harassment, Corporate Governance, Affirmative action, Involvement with communities”.

The two days YMC conference came to an end with the Summarizing Address : Creating a Brave New World - a People Agenda where the speaker was Mr. Bhavdeep Singh, CEO , Fortis and the facilitator was Mr. P Dwarakanath, Director-HR, Max India. The summarizing address was followed by the vote of thanks by Mr. Faisal Nadeem Saiyed, Associate Director- OD, Aviva Life Insurance, Convener, YMC.
He felt a sense of Déjà-vu while giving the final vote of thanks, he spoke on Volunteerism, the spirit of imbibing, as members of Delhi Chapters volunteered to take out time from their business schedule to make the conference a great success. He expressed sincere thanks towards-
